Haven't read much of the manga, so I can't decide on that. But I like the anime a lot more than I liked the first movie. They changed stuff around too much for my liking in the movie. And I thought the acting could've used some work. but that's just me.

I recommend watching the anime, and then following the episode you have seen last with the manga chapter(s) that correspond. Doing this gives you all that you missed from the manga, and all of the dramatic feel of the anime. ^^

Manga over Anime, Anime over Movies. Not that I didn't like the films; I thought they had a nice touch in how they showed Kira's impact on the population with a little more detail. while the ending wasn't as interesting, it was also to be expected. After all, what would be the point of making the movies end the same way as the manga, and then make an anime series that would also end the same way?

I love parts of the anime more than the manga at times. For one, episode 7 was brilliant. Just the exectution of the final moments as the Death Note took effect sent shivers down my spine.

Movies was awful, the characters were playing their role very bad and the storyline was edited, as for Anime I liked it at start, the drawing style was one of mine favorite and I was overtaken by story and Anime's heroe intelect... The Manga I would like to say is Masterpiece that surpassed Anime because it have been completed.

The anime had some good sides too, but I like the manga better.
Haven't seen the live-action movies, but I hate Ryuk's appeal in them... :S
